Discovery: Short Treks #3

Discovery: Short Treks
Episode 3 :
The Brightest Star
Original Airdate: 12|06|2018
[spoilers ahoy!]

Author's Note: Just as an FYI, there are six new Short Treks on their way!  I will, of course, be reviewing them eventually. As well as the Picard series.

We start this week's episode with a beautiful lake, with two moons visible over it, and then two Kelpiens harvesting from that lake... harvesting kelp.

[I get it. kelp, Kelpiens, god help me. TIL. At least Doug Jones is cute]

I like his voiceover. I really like his voice a lot, it's soothing and pleasant. Wait. What is this creepy noise in the middle of the night?? Man they really like shoehorning horror into my Trek.

Man, the environment is gorgeous though, regardless of the creepiness right now. The candles and the blue-and-red-and-gold lighting... mmm. I admit it, I'm a lighting whore. You should see my art (no really, go check out my art here: Linky! Linky2!)

But the lighting here?

Okay that is creepy as FUCK damn. @_@ It's almost like a cult of unwillings... and they just. Ufhashfa I shudder. They get put into a circle and then they just. Vanish. Forever. That's nuts. I mean literally that is insane.

Seriously this has such strong cult-like vibes, along with the idea of balance being maintained only because the victims are lulled into a sense that they get "peace" from their personal sacrifice. Nope.

Father? Oh nooooo Saru's dad is in charge of this terrible ritual? ALjkshalsdh I mean I would say "poor guy" but it's something they believe pretty strongly in, if they say it's to preserve the balance.

"To keep it is forbidden..." And then Saru looks over at it. WELL THAT'S SOME FORESHADOWING RIGHT THERE.

Oh my god his precious, curious little self. I can't take it. "Is there anything out there besides us and the Ba'ul??" *innocent precious face*

I am deceased. "If the Great Balance meant for us to fly we'd have wings!" "Do the Ba'ul have wings?" Q.Q Noooo don't scold my precious, curious baby *protects* (Yeah yeah I know, the balance, safety, comfort.... no thanks. Lies, all lies.)

*sneaksneak*

Better be careful, Saru, so someone doesn't find you! I mean gurl shouldn't you take that outside? And not play in your tent or whatever this is with this thing that fell off? And seriously, why? You are definitely asking all the right questions... even if you should really take that thing outside, buddy.

Handy that it apparently comes with instructions? >_> Not that he doesn't seem to have a pretty good knack for technology. Okay, maybe it's not instructions? It's something he wrote? I can't tell. Pretty cool though.

[okay what they really are is hard to see. sorry.]

Heyyyy they have a dice game. Nice! I like seeing the kinds of games other species play in sci-fi shows and stuff. It's pretty cool. Poor guy, maybe waiting for help that might never come. :C

Omg his device finally goes off! Hopefully it's someone good, because I will revolt if it's not.

Oh my... are you serious? You just tell your child that it's like... perfectly okay if they die cuz the balance. (Yes I know, that's just how it is but damn). Poor Saru looks so saddened by that like "dad wouldn't you even be SAD?"

Oh honey. They're content with it because they're not curious about other things, they're complacent and you're not.

AAAHhhhh watching him writing and then seeing he's trying to copy the word "today" from the communication thing.

Uuuugh they're so sweet. I love that she gives him her knife. Ajhhksdfsjdhf. This planet is gorgeous, ugh. If it weren't for the Ba'ul, I would totally vacation there, it's just so beautiful.

Wow... we even get to hear a little of the Kelpien language when Georgiou uses the communicator! (She looks so pretty with her hair like that. Also- I love that she's the one rescuing him!)

Oh nooo if he leaves, he'll never be able to go back??? At least he's going into it knowing, and she's been honest with him. Because I swear to god if she had lied and said he could go back.... *shake fist* But he's done with this shit.

[Georgiou right now]

And his sister sees the ship. DANG.

My heart! I love this episode, I think this is my favorite after Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad. I think it gets a 10/10 because it's so good. It's creepy but mostly it's soft and hopeful, and I like that about it. And it shows that Saru has always been different, and kind of gives you an idea of why he's the way he is.
